In 1998 PlaNet Computers started the first Internet cafes in Laos.
These were established principally to service the tourist community,
however it soon became obvious that the local community, both
Lao and foreign, were interested in using the facilities.
The reasons varied. In some cases local customers had no equipment
or connection of their own. Sometimes the speed and equipment
were better at the cafes than at home. Most interesting though
were those who came because they liked the atmosphere. It has
become a meeting place for people with something in common; the
desire to be online. Today about 35% of customers at PlaNet Cafes
are locals, mainly students, many of whom have never experienced
Internet outside of an Internet cafe.
There
are currently 4 Internet cafes operated by PlaNet Computers in
Laos, and there are 6 more planned in Laos for 2000. These cafes
are each customized to meet the needs of their clients, while
guaranteeing common fundamentals: providing quality Internet access,
trained and responsive staff and value added services for a reasonable
price.
PlaNet begs for expansion. The current model in Laos will be successful
across the all of the South East Asian tourist route immediately.
Also, PlaNet Computers in Laos is currently setting up the first
fully authorised ISP in Laos, with a view to expanding these services
to Cambodia before the end of the year.
